Work in Progress...

After a lot of  prep work and doodles in my sketchbook I have finally settled into The Duel. It'll be about three pages, now I have edited and thumbnailed what I want from it. I am drawing freehand with a Pilot g-tec c4 which is a lovely little sketching pen, onto sheets of A4 photocopy paper. The fine point allows me to go over bits that might not be working and 'loose' bothersome lines in the crosshatching. I'm keeping the drawings deliberately small because having had experience with crosshatching large areas in the past I want to avoid aching joints and keep my knuckles into old age. The tiny drawing are then scanned and assembled in Photoshop.

I am lettering as I go on this one, sometimes writing the lettering first and letting the drawings evolve around it. I'm keeping the colouring flat and simple sticking with four shades rather than my layer upon layer approach of textures. I like the 'flat' effect and I don't want to compete with the crosshatching too much, and it's a lot quicker to do.

Doodle Pages...

Various doodles made originally in pencil and brushpen on about 30 sheets of A4 photocopy paper, the best ones cut out and stuck on a textured sheet in Photoshop. The originals are going straight into the bin as a testament to a frustrating day. There does seem to be a theme in there though, hiding behind masks and mono vision. My subconsciousness at work?

Art Teacher Story Time...

A teacher at my school told me the story of when he was at art school, one day, had thought he had done a pretty nifty looking drawing indeed and presented it to his tutor. His tutor took hold of the drawing... "Good, but do you know how to tell if it's a GREAT drawing?" Of course, the humble students reply is "no", at which point the tutor tears the drawing vigorously in half... indicating to the torn paper edge, he says to the aghast student "There, that's how..."

And with that short story told I am now off to the paper recycling bin.

Process Page... Kinda

I shouldn’t really be showing this as it will be the momentum ‘kiss of death’ for it. This is the first page to a new dream story, the one that has been in the back of my brain box for the past few months. I was excited with the way the first few pages were going that I had to display it publically, it’s not a long one this, at about five pages so hopefully it will be finished soon (like I say, kiss-of-death saying anything like that around here). There has been lots a going on here lately . I have nearly signed off on a huge inflatable tent design for a community arts organisation, I did a comics workshop at Chapel Square Arts in Halifax last Saturday and there are lots of other bits and pieces in-between that are in the planning stage. Sometimes I look at where I am and get frustrated that it’s not going fast enough, other times the morning mist clears and I feel really lucky that I can do what I do.
