Down A Back Street Somewhere....

I have passed this flight of stone stairs and ornate railings many times on my way to and from the studio and have thought it would be good to draw. I don't know the name of this side street, will try to find out.

Nice Little Drawing Book....

Here's me complaining in great British tradition about the weather and how useless it is for drawing in..... AGAIN!

Big Machines....

Like HG Wells 'War of the Worlds' huge machines are appearing at the Waterfront, towering high into the sky preparing to manipulate everything beneath them. (See the 8th of Jan for the sketchbook version of this drawing).

Warming Up

Having been working on shadow puppets for the past few weeks it's a relief to get back to my studio full time and get on with the Wakefield diary work. Before launching back into it though I sit down and do warm up drawings first. These are just meanderings from my pen to the paper getting me used to the act of drawing again.

I like the feel of a pen gliding across the paper, the curves and line that appear from over twenty years of such doodling, flowing more like handwriting than 'proper drawing' (whatever proper drawing is?)

Low Light Levels...

A problem with photographing 'the wall' is the low light levels at the moment. Everything seems a bit grey and blurry but I am sure that will pass soon. Another problem I am finding is the scale at which I am working at, versus, the scale of a blog photograph, it is very difficult to read my handwriting that accompanies the images, ah well, I guess you will all have to come and see the exhibition in person at Wakefield Art Gallery in May to 'read' these pictures.

Winter Shadow Puppets

Luke and I have been working in schools for the Faceless Company this week, doing a shadow puppet version of 'Conference of the Birds', (the street theatre performance we were involved with last summer, oh so long ago) with schools in Batley and West Ardsley. Creating a 'pared' down story for the children to introduce them to the basics of making and performing shadow puppets.

Some of the shadow puppets I designed for the children to have a go with. They were used on a screen 8ft wide.

Market Snow

I have started to draw up the drawings from the third of January from my sketchbook and I detect a slight change in style coming on. I am using a brush pen which has always been one of my favourite tools to use but have never been that good with, although I am enjoying drawing this size with it today.

Above is another 'wintery' market scene, I think it may be something to do with the weather that is effecting the change in my drawing, very dense blacks with white acrylic ink over the top. Just like winter.

Cat Bites Man

Our cat Jack has been getting aggressive lately. He wants to be petted and will sit with you for a bit but then gets all 'confused' and goes into attack mode still purring, I have had a few scratches in the past from him but nothing like the mauling he gave me this night. I think it may be the type of cat food we're giving him (Sainbury's own) or it may just be he's becoming a grumpy arse in his old age.

Leaves in Puddle

I'ts raining again. I look down at my feet as I descend a flight of concrete steps and see brightly coloured leaves in a puddle. Rain drops make perfect rings in the water.

Chantry Bridge

Chantry Chapel is old. I pass it most days on my way into town, it takes you away from the constant hum of the traffic on the busy roads close by. Today I notice the new heads (south side I think) in the sunlight compared to the older more weather beaten ones.

Blackbirds Eating Yellow Apples

This is the kind of thing I like. Those moments that seem unique. I noticed the birds first then the bight yellow apples second, and it got me thinking about how little I know, do apples belong at this time of year? I stood still and waited for the birds to return, as soon as I moved to take my sketchbook out of my bag they were off so I cheated and used my camera to get the detail, but even then they were a bit camera shy....

First Snow

It was so dark in the house this morning that there could have been no sunrise this morning. It got a bit better when the snow finally came about ten o'clock, by which time I was out wandering the streets of Wakefield city centre. These sketches are of the market area which was empty today, no surprise considering the temperature outside.

(On the way into town I called into a corner shop for a small pack of tissues, as I went into the shop the smell reminded me of my Grans house from years ago. I marched up to the counter and in my clearest voice asked the man behind the counter 'Do you smell....' what I meant to say was 'Do you sell...', he seemed to see the funny side of my embarrassment).
