Scunthorpe?

Image
I am working with the street theatre company Facelessin the North Lincolnshire town of Scunthorpe. After the set up of the tent and set is complete I get to wander aimlessly around the town centre for an hour. It's pretty much like any other town centre on a Saturday afternoon except for the wonderful mosaiced pedestrian walk way which seems to go on forever. I end up back at the performance tent and eat my sandwich and draw these guys on the church behind us.

I forgot about these pages from the other day, silly me...

Walking and Dreams

More black pages, my favourite being the apocalyptic Milton Keynes, I think I caught a bit of its character there. These suit the mood of the dream though.

Man, What's With the Weather?

(Guess I answered my own question there). Saying that, it has inspired me to work differently today...

I did this page quickly, not wanting to get caught up in the 'technical' side of drawing, which I think naturally happens when I do blue pencil, layout, 'cartoon' stuff. This is more observational and in the moment for me, Jack was lying there in the shadows of the morning, oblivious to the world and it seemed to sum the day up. The drawings were done on an A4 drawing pad, I inked in bold lines around the two drawings to unify them into one page. I have not drawn this way for a long time and enjoyed the experience. I don't like the feeling when drawing becomes a chore.

I scanned the page to composite the image and the writing and couldn't resist applying my favorite filter to it. What this does for me is produce a fresh page in my eye. The 'graying out' around the shapes, I had no control over that at all and for me, makes a more graphic image.
