John Welding (Superstar) Update....

Okay, so since the exhibition started I have not been doing much personal drawing. Time has been spent at the Art Gallery running workshops and showing friends around my work.

Time has also been spent in meetings with other organisations interested in what I'm doing too. Which is very nice.

And I have taken on a new studio space next door to my old studio. The old space was 5m square and served a very useful purpose with the large scale drawings, now that I am back working in sketchbooks it makes sense to downsize to a more manageable space. I am now in Westgate Studios Quad Space which is a quarter the size of my old studio... a Quad Bite you might say.

The 'superstar' label comes from my friend Richard Wheater who I have been working with on a bit of leaflet design for Wakefield's first Art Walk on June 18th 2008. Interesting times indeed for little ol' me..... and the city of Wakefield.

Books...

A few books I am reading and looking through at the moment.

The Ninth Circle: Well haven't started this one yet, it's full of words and no pictures, but it looks and feels great.

Haunted: Philippe Duprey loose line drawings in a dream like state, tackles drawing inspiration and the urge to continue. Brilliant and inspiring.

The Savage: David almond has written one of my favourite books of recent years 'Skellig' and Dave Mckean always makes interesting pictures. This started out as a short story but has gone beyond that into the perfect 'scary' story for children.

The Arrival: I have been after this for awhile after reading 'The Red Tree'. A wordless journey of immigrants from many lands drawn in pencil and imagination. Stunning.

'In the Picture' Talk at Wakefield Art Gallery

I'll be giving a short talk at Wakefield Art Gallery on Wednesday 7th May 2008, 12.30 -1.15pm admission FREE. I'll be disscussing my life, universe and everything inbetween that got me to where I am today, which probably means talking about comics and drawing and that large wall drawing thing I've just completed.

Private Views....

Last night was the private view for 'Drawing the City', my nightmare scenario was me, with a glass of wine and a cold wind blowing through the galleries and no one turning up. However... people did turn up by the dozens, from all walks of life, it reminded me of the Kevin Costner film Field of Dreams and the ghostly voice from the corn field saying 'build it and they will come' - well it's an old film and I might have misremembered the exact extract but the feeling is the same, only with drawings.

My friend Carrie very kindly gave me a bunch of daffs last night and this morning they have come out in the sunlight.
